Undertones VS modifiers
In the world of fancy color diamonds, we apply a large number of terms to describe a stone. Some of these terms portray the stone’s general beauty, some its gemological attributes, and some its color. Many terms were invented by the GIA and became industry standards after decades of use. Other terms, such as “Tint, Tone, Shade, Pure, Dirty, Sweet, a touch of…”, etc.

Noticeable discrepancies between live and in person auction house diamonds can create a bit of controversy. When a customer buys a high quality, fairly priced stone in retail and later sees what appears to be a comparable stone in an auction catalogue for a significantly lower price, it disappoints the owner.

Pre-Auction Analysis: May 17th 2016, Sotheby’s Geneva
This Vivid Pink has quite a low inner-grade (grade 2). The undertone is warm, leaning towards the orange spectrum (grade 2). The color dispersion is very high and earned a grade of 4. The GIA photograph in the Sotheby’s catalogue is the most accurate reference for this stone’s undertone (p 358-359).

Pre-Auction Analysis: May 18th 2016, Christie’s Geneva
It is very rare to see a diamond with a 1:54 ratio and low depth percentage of 59.9%, which should be considered a feature, as it makes the diamond appear larger than its actual size. The color is very dark and could easily be mistaken a Deep Blue.

The romance around Type IIa diamonds first began when scientists found a link between diamonds sourced from the legendary Golconda mine in India and the fact that stones hailing from this area were commonly Type IIa. Chromism in pink diamonds
Pink diamonds from Argyle have been known by polishers, laboratories and traders to exhibit a phenomenon of photochromism whereby their colour can be influenced by illumination of different lights and intensities. These influences are relatively short-lived and most conspicuous after illumination by short wavelength light of high intensity. This effect is particularly noticeable when using instruments to observe fluorescence, such as a DiamondView, which after use with Argyle pink diamonds results in a distinctively bleached or pale colouration.
