Steady 2023 Growth for Fancy Colored Diamonds
Fancy color diamonds enjoyed "steady growth" of 2.2 per cent during 2023, according to new figures published by the Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF).
That's significantly slower than 2022, when they surged by 3.9 per cent, but compares favorably with colorless diamonds, which lost 16.5 per cent of value during 2023.
But Q4 figures suggest a slowdown. The Index Fancy Color Diamond Index, which tracks pricing data for fancy color diamonds of all sizes and intensities in Hong Kong, New York, Geneva and Tel Aviv, was up by just 0.1 per cent.

A good time to invest in pink, blue or yellow diamonds?
The value of natural-coloured diamonds rose 77 per cent between 2010 and 2019 according to the Israel-based Fancy Color Research Foundation (FCRF). Fancy pink diamonds led the index during the decade, increasing in value by 116 per cent, while the value of fancy yellow and fancy blue diamonds rose by 21 per cent and 81 per cent respectively. The steep rise in the value of pink diamonds seen in the last decade is partly attributable to Chinese buyers entering the market. “The year 2010 marked a landmark in this segment,” says Miri Chen, CEO of FCRF.
“Since then, prices have steadily increased year after year due to unprecedented demand for fancy coloured diamonds from the Chinese market. It’s believed that a third of fancy coloured diamond buyers worldwide are Chinese.”

Why coloured diamonds are smart investors’ new choice
While almost all high jewellery can be considered a form of investment—with one-off jewels from the world’s most iconic houses starting at about £150,000—the term “investment jewellery” refers to the rarest and most sought-after rocks. And coloured diamonds, as De Beers knows well, are where the smart money is; the value of these geological rarities increased by 77 per cent between 2010 and 2019, according to the Fancy Color Research Foundation, which tracked the average prices of pink, blue and yellow diamonds.

“The intensity of its colour is on the lower end, bordering on the intense grade," the report stated.
“Its prominent and tall crown, coupled with the concentration of most of its colour under the table area, could suggest that this diamond was recut from an old-mine cut diamond.”

Miri Chen: Fancy color diamonds, owing to their extreme rarity, tend to maintain their value even when resold on the second-hand market
For the past decade, the FCRF has been producing reports and offering services to a wide spectrum of stakeholders: from mining companies and large international jewelry brands to mid-sized retailers and savvy collectors, thereby bolstering confidence and transparency in this luxurious segment.
Recently, we introduced two reports designed to enrich the buying experience for jewelry enthusiasts and heighten the investment allure of any natural color diamond. Jewelers who incorporate these reports find them extremely valuable.
The 'Diamond Diary' report provides a meaningful content experience that no expert can replicate on-site, while the 'Rarity Report' reveals the detailed story of a diamond's rarity. Together, these resources create a compelling experience for both jewelers and collectors. Jewelers report that these two resources have dramatically improved interactions with interested collectors, resulting in a higher rate of sales.

Colour diamonds are also enjoying a rise in interest, says Miri Chen of the Fancy Color Research Foundation. “As for the shift from colorless to fancy color, we see more wholesalers who are looking for safer areas to invest their capital. As a result, many of them increase their fancy color diamonds at the expense of their colorless inventory. “We do observe a dramatic change in the way retailers present fancy color diamonds,” adds Miri. The feedback we receive indicates a significant increase in the success rate of fancy color sales. Even inexperienced sales teams are now able to engage in fascinating conversations with collectors and convey genuine appreciation and an emotional connection.” Although pink diamonds have seen the strongest price growth over the long term, yellow diamonds have been rising in popularity over the past 12 months, according to the latest FCRF data.
